Eastbourne Regatta Report
A cracking days racing at Eastbourne. The sort of sea we all love with a mixture of seamanship and fitness. It seems it suited Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown RC as they had a massive seven wins on the day. The top spots in the senior events eluded them with the host club Eastbourne winning the senior Ladies fours, Herne Bay winning the Mens Senior fours and Bexhill winning the Men's senior Pairs and Sculls. Deal will still be happy with there performances though winning the Ladies Senior Pairs and comming second and Third in the premier event - The men's Senior fours. Their Junior/Senior crew, having won there own event taking the second spot.
Folkestone Veterans were back in town with a win. Worthing Junior Ladies stepped up to the mark and won their event and Shoreham taking the Ladies Novice point.
The results mean that after two regattas Deal leap into the lead in the Grand Aggregate (1 point per win). Bexhill drop to second and Herne Bay third. The league is even tighter, Bexhill are joined by Deal at the top with 117 points with Herne Bay close on 109. There is a mid-table battle going on between Eastbourne, Folkestone, Worthing and Shoreham. Its looking to be more competitve this year and good to see the events well populated.
See you at the weekend, weather permitting!

Worthing Regatta
Hurrah!! The regatta season finally kicked off at Worthing on Saturday. A lovely sunny day with calm seas. I hope you took your suntan lotion with you! There was some good racing on the day with very few incidents. One exception of course I hear you say. I wont dwell to much on that but I suggest you all read the section below on the 5 minute rule. Then take the time to explain it to your coxswains and novices. If your in any doubt please ask an official at the next regatta to explain the rule!
It was good to see so many novices in both the ladies and mens sections. The standard seems to be raising as well which is good also. We pushed for many years to change the rules to 2 wins before you go up and this seems to be helping. Sorry Phil - More paperwork keeping track of whats happening I know. I should also attribute the rasing standards to those coaches out there who take the time to teach the young people properly. Technique, Technique, Technique. It pays off in the long run and raises the standards right to the top.
The Herne Bay seniors dominated there race. No incidents at the turn. I know - I was there LOL!! Actually, we were disqualified for not completing the turn. The flag popped up under the stern meaning that we didnt complete it successfully. We didnt go back for another one either! I guess that is something else that you should all be aware of. A reasonable attempt at the turn is not good enough. The whole boat must go round the turn!

The 5 Minute Rule.
Rule 37 g The Five Minute Rule!
There will be a 5 minute time limit imposed from the last crew finishing, at the Umpires direction, to the start of the next race. The Signal An audible signal of two blasts on the air horn will indicate the start of this 5 minute time limit At the end of the 5 minute time limit the Starters will raise the Red flag, this will be accompanied by a single blast on the air horn to indicate that all crews must be afloat and ready to race under Starters orders.
Any crew or sculler not afloat and ready to race within 5 boat lengths either side of the starting line at this time will be disqualified.
Any late crew or sculler must join the start line from behind, any crew or sculler rowing in front of the starting line will be disqualified. Except at Southsea Regatta where all crews must be within the starting line and the submarine poles before the end of this time limit".
Equipment Changes All equipment changes should be done within this time limit on the beach in front of the Starters. If these boat changes are done by the Clubs in the space provided in the boat park crews should be aware of the risk of not coming under Starters orders. Stating that your crew will be delayed or not hearing the audible signals as reasons for not being afloat will not be accepted and the race will proceed without you. If all the required crews or scullers are afloat before the end of this time limit, the Starters will proceed to start the race.
The essence of this rule is that if you have no boat changes you should be ready to start the next race as soon as the last crew nominated by the umpires crosses the line!
(Note:- If there are slow crews in the previous race the umpire may at his direction nominate a crew nearer the line as the last crew! DONT WAIT FOR THE LAST CREW BEFORE YOU GO AFLOAT!!)
Crews who do have boat changes should notify the starter of such changes and carry these out in front of the starters. Remember that this is five minutes to be on the starting line and ready to race!!
If no one notifies the starter of changes then the race may start immediately at his discretion.
Most regatta secretaries try and plan the racing so that there should be few boat changes. Its impossible to get a race plan with no changes.
Viking Shield Regatta & Results
If you missed this regatta you missed a good days rowing and some exciting racing. Thanks should be given to Herne Bay ARC for organising the event and to the officials of the day. Bob Watkins and Karl Bowman for Starts and Judging and to Jeremy Crow for Umpiring.    The regatta was also well supported by the clubs of the association. Only Shoreham and Southsea missing (The regatta is mainly for Kent Clubs) so the racing would give a good idea of the main contenders in the various categories for the coming season. There was some good racing in every category with most being closely contended.
