Viking Shield Regatta & Results
If you missed this regatta you missed a good days rowing and some exciting racing. Thanks should be given to Herne Bay ARC for organising the event and to the officials of the day. Bob Watkins and Karl Bowman for Starts and Judging and to Jeremy Crow for Umpiring.    The regatta was also well supported by the clubs of the association. Only Shoreham and Southsea missing (The regatta is mainly for Kent Clubs) so the racing would give a good idea of the main contenders in the various categories for the coming season. There was some good racing in every category with most being closely contended.

Deal and Worthing seemed to be the clubs that have expanded there rowing numbers. Both picking up wins and places with Deal coming out on top of all as the table above shows. The two big clubs from last year, Herne Bay and Bexhill still pressing with results, there second & third places shows that they will be in the mix. Shoreham usually have some good crews and with a strong Southsea threatening to be at the coast regattas it should make for a very interesting and competitive season.
The Viking Shield being the most important event of the day. The outcome deciding who hosts the event next year. It’s only competed for between the Kent Clubs although Sussex crews can enter the race. The CARA champions from Bexhill won the race by two lengths. The race for the Viking Shield was between two Herne Bay crews. Ryan Hosking and Darren Ingram have been the winners for the last ten years but they have been pushed recently by their B crew, Ashley Epps and Andrew Cooper (Pictured). On the race back from the turn, Ashley and Andrew had the lead and hung on by two lengths to the finish.
Ladies Senior 4+ Winners - Worthing
The Worthing Junior Ladies look a very strong crew winning both Junior and Senior events in very similar times. The Senior ladies was very close with five crews finishing within about six lengths of each other. Will Worthing be going straight to seniors at the first regatta? There is still Shoreham to add and they were champions last year so this looks to be a strong category. The Junior fours also looks a strong section with Deal winning by 1/2 length from Herne Bay B crew.Men's Senior 4+ Winners - Herne Bay
Herne Bay were impressive in the Men's Senior fours. The Viking Shield winners Ashley and Andrew, Junior Sculls Winner Ben Smissen and Ryan Hosking in the crew lead from start to finish for an easy victory

The Starts in the Mens Races
The Starts continue to be an issue but before I go on I should compliment the Ladies on their compliance with the rules. They obeyed the starter’s instructions and had a fair start for every race. Well Done the Ladies! As for the men, The exception being the Senior Sculls, some of there antics are in line with Didier Drogba. Racing past the line at every opportunity trying to gain a length on their opposition and get a running start. Add in the crews hanging back hoping for I don’t know what, made the starters job difficult. You were given plenty of leeway on Saturday but be warned for the CARA Regattas. Do you want to sit out your races on the beech!?
The Turn in the Senior Ladies
The second indecent was something that has been on this site for sometime. Admittedly not all CARA members look at this site but the message doesn’t seem to be getting around. As an official of the day I was able to hear the opinion of the crew and the umpire. The Hastings senior ladies (Drawn lane 8) were leading as they approached the turn (No idea of the margin). The umpire tells me it was turn "4" so they were "Off Station", ie they were not on turn "8" which the umpire considered to be the straight course. As they turned the buoy the Folkestone crew (Drawn lane 7) also "Off Station" tried to come round the inside of them. Without getting into the details of if they drifted wide or whatever the rules are quite clear. If you are "Off Station" then you abide by your accidents! In this case both crews are off station, winning or not and so the race continues.
